Diggs Field.
A radical low-energy renovation of a listed Peter Aldington home.
Constructing Excellence Project of the Year — runner-up, 2013.
Refurbishing this then-derelict 1968 modernist house was a challenge. It was Grade 2 listed, not just outside but also parts of the interior including the kitchen and flooring. Conservation officers and English Heritage were involved from the start and we even had the pleasure of the original Architect Peter Aldington visiting the project.
As well as saving the building, the client wanted to upgrade it to the Passivhaus standard — not easy with asbestos and 40 years of water ingress to contend with, plus a sunspace causing major overheating issues. The project came in on budget, reducing energy consumption by over 90%. It went on to compete against much bigger commercial projects to finish runner-up to the Shard in the Constructing Excellence Awards 2013!
